With 40% of the top trending global destinations for UK travellers this winter1 being on home turf, it seems families and friends are seeking out the magic of Britain’s rustic landscapes to find their festive spirit this year. And it’s easy to see why – the UK is home to incredible hidden rural gems waiting to be discovered –  all promising crackling fires, countryside walks, and toasty evenings together.

Airbnb data also shows that this winter, trips with bigger groups of friends and family are on the up. Bookings among UK guests for stays with four or more bedrooms have rose by 37% year-on-year2, with 36% of staycation searches being made by groups, and 31% by families3. Travellers are seeking homes that offer both space to come together and room for privacy, creating the perfect setting for festive or seasonal escapes.

When it comes to travelling as a family, the trend of choosing lesser trodden paths, without the hassle of long journeys continues. Over a third (34%)4 of winter family bookings were made in non-urban areas, and the majority (72%) were within 300 miles of home5.
