Travel on Airbnb supports communities across Oklahoma by generating economic opportunity for local residents, small businesses, and governments.¹

Hosts and the guests they welcome also support communities by generating an influx of tourism taxes for local governments at a time when jurisdictions are facing budget shortfalls.

This is especially true in rural areas of Oklahoma. Across the state, nearly 60 percent of US Census tracts are home to Airbnb listings but no hotels,³ meaning short-term rentals are often the primary source of visitor accommodations and play an important role in rural economies. 

Because many listings are located outside traditional tourism hubs, the economic benefits of travel are more widely dispersed thanks to stays in communities. According to an internal survey, each guest across the US spent an average of approximately $200 per person, per day on their trip in 2025, not including the cost of their listing.

Nearly half of US guest spending occurred in the neighborhood where guests stayed—helping bring economic activity to local businesses and communities that may not otherwise attract tourism dollars.

An important source of supplemental income

The typical host in Oklahoma shares their home occasionally to help supplement their income.⁴ For many, the income earned from hosting helps offset rising costs of living and supports their ability to remain in their homes.

Airbnb works with cities, states, and local governments to help support responsible travel and address community concerns. These efforts include:

• All guests booking a stay, and hosts and co-hosts receiving bookings, are required to complete our identity verification process. Additionally, we run standard criminal background checks for US hosts and booking guests. 
• A global ban on disruptive parties and events.  
• Implementing anti-party technology on certain bookings on holiday weekends such as New Year’s Eve, Halloween, and 4th of July. In the five years since we introduced this policy and measures to help enforce it, we have seen an over 50% decrease in the global rate of party reports to us.
• A Neighborhood Support Line enables neighbors to report a concern about a property in their local community that they believe is listed on Airbnb, such as a party in progress.
• A 24-hour Safety Line  is available for hosts and guests to  reach our Safety team for support with urgent issues, like a disruptive or unauthorized party.
• Free noise sensor for hosts in the US, which can help to get ahead of issues before they start while respecting guest privacy
