Australia
From tens of thousands of entries from around the world, 100 aspiring designers, architects, and DIYers from 23 countries have been chosen to bring their crazy ideas to life and share in the $10 million USD OMG! Fund, including four recipients from Australia.
The winning ideas stood out for their unique and inspiring design, sustainable consideration, and novel ways of offering immersive guest experiences. Recipients will each receive up to $100,000 USD to make their fantastical creations possible, and over the course of the next ten months, will design, construct and outfit their spaces to be guest-ready by Summer 2023 – when guests may find them available as part of Airbnb’s OMG! Category.
Selected by the OMG! Fund judging panel, that included Australian architectural expert Koichi Takada, these elaborate ideas are expected to make the OMG! Category of homes 100 times more extraordinary once they’re made bookable on the platform.
Now more than ever Aussie’s are are looking to maximise their travel and stay in unique spaces to create a full experience with their holiday. With the recent launch of Airbnb’s Categories and the popular OMG! Category, it has never been easier to find fun exciting listings that are usually in areas that lay off the well beaten path. Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand
From a luxury bubble on top of a mountain with breathtaking views, to an eco-igloo dome home situated in a rainforest, the successful Australian applicants expand the idea of what an Airbnb stay can be.
“My inspiration came after sleeping under the stars in a small tent when I was in France last year” said OMG! Fund recipient Timothy H. “The idea was to create an out of the ordinary, yet unique and accessible experience for guests. The result is a transparent bubble high up on a mountain top with 360-degree views of the night sky, fields and oceans below.”
Inspired by a sky full of stars and the power of reconnecting with nature, a stay in this luxury bubble will make you feel like you are floating on top of the world. Located a stone’s throw away from the world-famous Wilsons Promontory National Park in Gippsland, Victoria, the bubble is also eco-friendly and sustainable, with the deck made out of recycled timber, and equipped with energy-saving appliances, low-flush toilets and low-flow showers using tank water.
The OMG! Fund recipients have an opportunity to experience the powerful economic benefits of Hosting on Airbnb – and many are already familiar, as over 50 percent are already Hosts. From 2019 to 2021, nights booked at unique properties have increased globally by nearly 50 percent and by 60 percent in Australia. With more guests booking unique stays, Hosts are also earning real income, with unique listings earning nearly $1 billion USD** ($1.59 billion AUD* equivalent) globally in 2021 alone, and over $73 million AUD in Australia.
The tens of thousands of entries drew inspiration from the depths of the sea to sci-fi novels, but certain natural elements and architectural features proved popular:
- 400 ideas offered spectacular stargazing experiences
- 961 ideas marched to the beat of their own drum, incorporating music in some way
- 777 juicy designs were inspired by fruit
- 680 ideas were wine-inspired
- 7,931 entrants proposed using solar panels for sustainable energy
- High in the sky, 1,214 ideas involved treehouses and 389 featured suspended structures
- 509 mushroom-inspired listings were ready to sprout from the earth
Others expressed devotion to the environment as their main drive to creating something unique. “We want to provide guests with a unique Aussie experience – to deliver a genuine connection to the landscape, and at the same time, inspire sustainable living and make eco-tourism mainstream,” said OMG! Fund recipient Matt D. from Melbourne, Victoria on his ‘Kangaroom’ – Floating Pod idea.
Utilizing almost 80% glass to seamlessly connect guests with their natural surroundings, ‘Kangaroom’ will be designed using modular pods to create a floating Airbnb stay situated on a kangaroo playground in Daylesford, Victoria. The property hosts an abundance of wildlife and will act as a ‘reverse zoo’ where guests reside in a comfortable and luxurious space, while being close to nature. The multi-level structure will levitate over panoramic views of the kangaroo habitat, leaving guests transformed with a new appreciation for the environment and empowered to make changes in their own lives for a sustainable future.
This Eco-Igloo dome home will be built using 6000 handmade aircrete bricks. Made up of four large domes which blend seamlessly into nature, the property is perfect for Aussie climates and it is a game changer to help more people achieve beautiful and affordable builds.
After saving two Boeing 737 aircrafts from being scrapped, OMG! Fund recipient Mary dismantled and transported them to York, Perth. Guests will be able to stay in one of these aircrafts at an airfield, while the other will be used as a tour experience. The aircraft will come with two ensuites and can accommodate up to six guests.

Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand
OMG! Fund recipient Jacqueline Y expands the idea of what an Airbnb stay can be. Her idea – the Kiwi Bird Nest is reconstructed from a former agricultural building, with a top-of-tower suspended sleeping nest with 360-degree views of the dense forest foothills and green pastures. Other unique elements in this bird nest stay include feathered lampshades, egg chairs, hay features, and free range eggs and goat milk that they can enjoy during their stay.
The OMG! Fund recipients have an opportunity to experience the powerful economic benefits of Hosting on Airbnb – and many are already familiar, as over 50 percent are already Hosts. With more guests booking unique stays, Hosts are also earning real income, with unique listings earning nearly $1 billion USD** ($1.76 billion NZD) globally in 2021 alone, and over $14 million NZD in New Zealand.
