Travel with your furry friends on Airbnb this World Animal Day

October 4 marks World Animal Day, an international day promoting the rights and welfare of both domestic and wild animals. Originated in 1931 by German writer, publisher and animal activist Heinrich Zimmerman, this commemorative day seeks to help shape a better future for animals all over the world.

Airbnb Hosts all around the world have welcomed thousands of guests and their beloved pets. In 2021, Aussie Hosts with pet-friendly listings earned over AUD $370,000,000¹. As the pandemic pet boom continues, guests are increasingly looking for listings that allow them to bring their furry friends along, with ample outdoor space for them to roam in. As of June 2022, pet-friendly stays make up almost one-fifth of all Aussie listings, an 11% increase compared to the same time period in 2019².

Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, said when it comes to pet-friendly Airbnb stays, owners are seeking locations outside capital cities, near beaches and dog parks, ideal for pets who love the great outdoors.

As of Q2 2022, the top ten destinations outside major capitals for pet-friendly travel in Australia are:

  • Gold Coast, Queensland
  • Geelong, Queensland
  • Nowra, New South Wales
  • Mornington, Victoria
  • Caloundra, Queensland
  • Coolum Beach, Queensland
  • Noosa Heads, Queensland
  • Ballarat, Victoria
  • Margaret River, Western Australia
  • Buderim, Queensland

If you’re an avid pet lover like me, you’ll know that no holiday is quite complete without taking your family pet along. With thousands of pet-friendly Airbnb listings across Australia, we have something for even the fussiest four-legged family members, but certainly homes with spacious yards, deck areas and amenities like tennis courts are always among the most popular for guests with pets.
