Research reveals pub-cations are the top travel trend this Easter in the UK

UK travellers are continuing to orient their travel choices around food and this Easter is no different – as new research from Airbnb* shows Brits are swapping Spanish tapas for countryside escapes with friends and families, where proximity to hearty pub-grub and the warm welcome of a rural local are top of the menu.

Over the past year, holidays centred around culinary experiences (otherwise known as “gastro-cations”) dominated as a travel trend, and Airbnb’s study shows this is only continuing to rise. Well over a third (42%) of the British public say proximity to memorable eating and drinking experiences on holiday remains one of the biggest influences on where they go, with nearly one in three (29%) noting that this motivation is even more important to them this year, compared to last.

As to where Brits are drawing inspiration from for food-focused travel, it’s clear that TikTok is a key source of intel – the #foodtrip hashtag has now reached well over a quarter of a million videos and 43% say they save restaurant and ‘top food spots’ videos to refer back to when travel planning.

But when it comes to foodie-trips specifically for this Easter, there is one overarching trend emerging – pub-cations!

Airbnb’s study reveals that over half (52%) of Brits are planning or considering a ‘pub-cation’ this Easter – a rural getaway centered around staying in or visiting cosy pubs nearby. Nearly half (47%) say it’s for the draw of a good  pub meal and wholesome classics, from fish and chips to Sunday roasts. For 39%, the comforting and traditional menus that offer something for everyone provide the perfect backdrop to losing track of time when catching up with loved ones.

Bookings for trips in UK countryside destinations have increased by 71% on Airbnb for this year’s Easter bank holiday weekend vs 2024, as families and friends seize the long weekend as a chance to reconnect, whilst taking in all that Britain’s pubs have to offer.

With Airbnb data revealing a quarter of Brits want to explore more of the UK beyond cities, and over half of bookings (52%)** being made in rural areas, the research showed a well-loved pub is often the deciding factor on where to go. As many as 29% admit they choose where they travel based on the location’s proximity to a pub.

This Easter Airbnb is proud to announce the transformation of the spare rooms of three rural pubs into beautiful listings. Before and after renovations below showcase the incredible makeovers, allowing these classic pubs to now welcome staycation goers. For even more inspiration on where to stay for a countryside pub-cation, Airbnb has curated its ultimate list of awe-inspiring stays in trending rural destinations, just a stone’s throw from a revered local pub.

Luke Impett, Partnerships and External Affairs for Northern Europe at Airbnb, comments: “Easter is the ideal time to reset, and our research shows that people in the UK love heading to the countryside for a cosy pub meal. In fact, 37% pick a country pub as their top place to meet up with family and friends during Easter.  Pubs serve as the vibrant hubs of the community – landlords who know their regulars, stories shared over hearty meals in a homely atmosphere. We’re proud to help our guests find the perfect stay, whether it’s a cosy spot just steps from their nearest tavern to actually staying within these charming pubs themselves.”
