With shorter days here and chillier nights ahead, Airbnb has revealed its trending destinations amongst British families who are seeking out winter wonderland retreats1

From cosying up by cottage fireplaces with a good board game, to family fun exploring festive Christmas markets, these destinations offer families a wealth of seasonal activities — ensuring something special for all ages.

Uncover lesser-known European Christmas market cities for festive adventures

Recent Airbnb data reveals a growing trend in searches for family stays in Rovaniemi, Lapland2  – the official hometown of Father Christmas. It’s no wonder, as meeting Santa Claus is a dream come true for many children, making Rovaniemi an increasingly popular destination this winter.

However, people are also ditching traditional holiday choices and exploring other destinations to get their dose of holiday spirit this Christmas. Airbnb data reveals that UK families are increasingly opting for stays in alternative festive European cities, with searches for stays in Cologne, Prague, and Strasbourg all soaring for the winter months.

These destinations offer families an array of wintery activities such as ice skating, and sight-seeing tours – perfect for entertaining little ones this winter. Better yet, many of them host sprawling Christmas markets, where memories can be made as families get closer to the spirit of the season.

Quintessentially British towns and countryside escapes

Closer to home, families are seeking cosy retreats in the countryside – with villages such as Bourton-on-the-Water, full of beautiful scenery and historical charm,  gaining traction.

Additionally, the chillier weather isn’t stopping families embracing the great outdoors this winter, with searches for rural destinations such as Norfolk on the rise. Here families can enjoy frosty walks in the Broads National Park, or hop on The Santa Train at Longleat House, Warminster

Airbnb’s data shows that families are heading to traditional towns to enjoy festivities, with Winchester and Exeter experiencing an uptick in searches. The city of Liverpool also came high on the list as an in-demand destination for families, with plenty of things to do for the kids – from immersing in a Christmas light display at Liverpool Cathedral, to heading to Santa’s Grotto at Knowsley Safari for an evening of festive fun.

Amanda Cupples, General Manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb said: “This winter, our data shows us that whilst classic choices for winter trips like Lapland and Alpine resorts reign supreme, families are also venturing to new destinations for their seasonal adventures. Lesser-considered European cities, like Cologne and Strasbourg are increasing in popularity, offering Christmas market cheer with fewer crowds. Wherever families choose to holiday this winter, our millions of hosts open up their doors for a home-away-from-home experience, with enough space for Mum and Dad to get some recuperation time too.”

A tailored family experience

As parents plan their next getaway, many seek reassurance that both the destination and accommodation will meet everyone’s needs — one reason why 41% of UK families prefer returning to the same destination each year3.

To ease the stress of finding the right stay, Airbnb has introduced over 50 new guest filters, helping families quickly identify ideal options from proximity to points of interest such as parks or playgrounds to recommended filters based on your past bookings and searches. These new features will help families find a stay that meets all their needs, allowing for a relaxing and memorable holiday together.
