Airbnb is pleased to announce that Safe Ireland, the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and the Milltown Malbay Community Centre are among the latest recipients of Airbnb Community Fund grants, which include more than 160 organisations making a difference in 30+ countries across six continents. Hundreds of thousands of euro have been distributed across the four Irish recipients, which represent a variety of local causes including; support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, promoting the rights of migrants, and local community development.

Launched in 2020, the Airbnb Community Fund is a $100 million initiative to directly support local communities and the people who live there. Each year, Airbnb donates to organisations that are supporting and strengthening communities around the world, including donations made in partnership with local hosts in many of these communities.

Each year, we’re proud to partner with hosts to identify important issues and many of the non-profit organisations to receive donations. Airbnb hosts are deeply connected to their communities and by involving them in this process, we aim for the Fund to drive meaningful local impact. As in previous years, hosts helped direct a majority of the donations.

Airbnb Community Fund Recipients in Ireland

This year’s Community Fund grants were directed to organisations focused on three issue areas identified by the Airbnb Host Advisory Board as important to the global host community: economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and ending abuse and exploitation. Larger national and regional organisations receiving donations include:

Safe Ireland

Since 2020, Airbnb has donated over €600,000 to Safe Ireland which provided direct survivor ‘flee fund’ financial support, a national network frontline services conference and amplified Airbnb’s provision of direct emergency hotel accommodation to Safe Ireland’s network during the pandemic.

This long standing partnership was marked last year with the launch of the Safe home, Safe pathways campaign with singer Lyra, that encouraged the Irish public to support their local domestic violence service and calling for all counties across the country to embed domestic violence responses into their local county Development Plans, enabling victims to escape abuse.

Members of local Host Clubs, which are led by volunteer hosts, nominated local, community-based non-profit organisations making a difference in their communities and then helped select the finalists.

Lorna Cahill, Community Leader for the Airbnb Host Club in Co. Clare said: “Airbnb has allowed us to support two great organisations in our community. Thanks to the grant the future of Saint Michael’s Golden Gloves Boxing Club will be secured for another year. The grant will enable them to cover their overheads allowing them to sponsor equipment and competition entry fees for members that otherwise would not be in a position to participate on a level playing field.”

Eileen Ryan from The Miltown Malbay Development Company, another recipient of the grant selected by the Airbnb Host Club in Co. Clare, said: “Oidhreacht an Chlair is a cultural institution which has archived the music, song and stories of our rich West Clare heritage. This treasure trove was in danger of being lost due to old IT systems that desperately need upgrading. With this Airbnb community grant, the archives will be held safely for future generations.”

Internationally, members of 85 Host Clubs – nearly double from last year – representing more than 30 countries selected organisations to receive grants, including Save Jeju Sea in South Korea; Cooperativa Sociale Incontro Onlus in Italy; Yachana Foundation in Ecuador; and Paso del Norte Center of Hope in Texas.
