Mexico City praises innovative Airbnb tax collection partnership
Last week, Emilio Barriga Delgado, treasurer of the Mexico City government and academic at El Colegio de México, wrote an opinion article in El Economista praising digital platforms that work with local tax authorities. He highlights Mexico City’s innovative fiscal policy that paved the way for Airbnb’s first tax collection participation in Latin America.
“With this unprecedented monetary policy, the city will continue to strengthen and potentialize its income, which will translate into more touristic promotion, which will benefit Mexico City’s community and economic development … As you can see, Airbnb operates as the tax withholder in cities around the world and in some of the most sought-after tourist destinations”, wrote Barriga.
After this landmark collaboration, Airbnb has also opted to collect and remit taxes on behalf of hosts in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. And we look forward to spreading this kind of partnership to other Mexican States and countries in the continent, following a global commitment that has yielded results in over 310 jurisdictions.
