The decision to become an Airbnb Host is not a small one. At Airbnb, we know there is much to consider, plan for and learn before taking the leap, which is why we strive to make it as seamless a process as possible while setting the industry standard for new-Host support. In May, we introduced a new onboarding process with just 10-steps, making it easier than ever to become an Airbnb Host and we know many have taken the leap.

Since May, new Hosts have signed up using this new technology — joining the many others who have signed up this year and are now enjoying success on the platform. New Hosts on Airbnb have earned $6 billion in income since the pandemic began, and in Q3 all Hosts earned a record $12.8 billion in income from Airbnb — up 27 percent from Q3 2019.

Being the top new Host in an entire state is no small feat. In the process of identifying each Host we got to know them and asked that some of them share why they started hosting and their advice for those considering it:

We wanted to move back to the area and found a house with a lot of land and a guest house. We thought ‘well, we have all of this extra space, why not share the beauty with others?’ So, we became Airbnb Hosts and have fully embraced and enjoyed welcoming people from near and far to experience this land. We have people stay for short periods and much longer. People often tell us that they haven’t slept as well as they have out here in years. For those considering hosting, we would say do not skimp on the small details, accommodate the little things - night lights, phone chargers, comfortable sheets and pillows. Above all, prioritize cleanliness and lack of clutter, ensure that people have a place to put their things. - Katherine and Gabe (Dolores, CO)
The desire to create beauty out of hardship was what inspired my husband and I during the pandemic isolation, to reconnect to our home and make it a place for flourishing. As community-oriented entrepreneurs now working mostly from home, we found ourselves socializing less and working more as a team than ever before. In January of 2021, we opened our first floor bedroom and attached private spa-bath to share with Airbnb travelers. It was a natural extension of restoring ourselves; a time when community and old-fashioned hospitality was craved and needed. In the many months since, being Airbnb Hosts has made our lives richer — and not just with extra income. Far more priceless are the genuine exchanges between guest and Host that are a part of an ages-old tradition. We're so grateful to be a part of this world wide community! - Pat H. (Hamden, CT)
As a first-time home buyer I knew I wanted a two-flat so that an Airbnb space could be part of our world. During my own travels I always cherish having local experiences — so being able to create an inspiring space for other travelers seemed right up my alley. With a focus on my own art along with other local artists — I took a stab at designing a creative space that would provide comfort and curiosity for people away from home. One of the unexpected surprises I found since hosting over the last eight months is how much joy it brings me to meet the guests in passing. Hearing about their lives and their experiences in Oak Park and Chicagoland brings a little bit of the outside world to our front door. Providing them with local art and an environment where they can unplug and find some solace has been a driving force. - Lacy C. Oak Park, IL
I had been helping to co-host in the area for a few years, even doing it remotely while I lived in Patagonia. I met my husband in Argentina and when we decided to move back to Minnesota, we fulfilled a dream of building a sustainable, Patagonia-inspired cabin so travelers can enjoy the same serenity from nature in this rustic refuge that our journey has brought us. My advice to those considering hosting is to personalize the experience for every guest - be intuitive with guests, cater to what they’re looking for, put detail into each guest experience. And keep working at improving that experience. Some people look at hosting as passive income, I don’t agree with that, I think to really be successful, you actively work at it. - Stevie and Juani P. (Grand Marais, MN)
There's hardly anything better than a home. A home is a kind of embodiment of love in space. We started hosting mostly because we love creating comfortable and beautiful living spaces. When Laura and I go on a trip, we know when we're staying in an Airbnb run by a Host who knows what they're doing, who knows how to set up spaces, who knows how to run through the process of thinking about the guest's experience from beginning to end, who knows how to make their space a home for travelers. We wanted to do the same thing for our guests, so we've tried to think about every detail in creating a home, from our messaging, to our presentation, to our check-out process. The best part of our own experience thus far has been reading the notes our guests leave in the guestbook. When we close the book, we remember why we do what we're doing. - Jeremy and Laura P. (Saint Charles, MO)
In the duration of the last 12 years of marriage, our home has always been the gathering place of family and friends. We've always dreamed of having a place where people could come and find rest. We moved to North Carolina about two years ago from Dallas-Fort Worth, TX and were able to find our current home with this treehouse on site. Upon purchasing the property, we made this treehouse become a "beacon" of rest for the Hendersonville, North Carolina area. We enjoy cultivating an atmosphere where people can come and find rest. Airbnb has made our hosting seamless from automated messaging to 100% of our bookings coming from their website/app. We advise those who are considering to count the cost of all expenses from building the site, furnishings, monthly supplies, and time that goes into starting and sustaining an Airbnb. Make sure your pictures and descriptions reflect your Airbnb to the most accurate form. Lastly, have fun and take care of your guests.  - Christopher & Torie C. (Hendersonville, NC)
As an avid traveler, it can sometimes be difficult to find a secure, comfortable place to stay. That is why after buying our first home, we felt driven to start hosting for Airbnb to offer a safe, unique space that would envelop our guests in the culture of the area. We have collaborated with local artists, added art from the community, and present guests with a one-of-a-kind experience. Airbnb has given us the opportunity to open up our home to gracious guests from all over the world, meet new people, and develop new connections throughout the process. - Alexandria V. (Springfield, OR)
We found the house that we currently live in on House Hunters (the newest season), which soon brought me to renting out our home a lot sooner than planned. Being an avid Airbnb guest myself, I thought this was a great way to start renting my house so I can keep my furnishing in the house without getting a storage unit for a long term tenant. I posted my house during the winter months while being in a pandemic and truly didn't think it was going to take off as it did. Within the first week of the property being posted the property was booked for the next three months. Since I am having guests stay in the house almost every single night from around the world. Each guest brings a unique piece of life to my house as an Airbnb Host I love it! Simply sharing my home and love for the city with people from all over. - Cody S. (Pittsburgh, PA)
