10 Remote Airbnbs to Leave the World Behind

Predicted to be one of this fall’s best-selling books and soon to be adapted into a feature film, Rumaan Alam’s new novel Leave the World Behind was inspired by Rumaan’s own retreat at a remote Airbnb in Long Island.

“We all have jobs to do and bills to pay, so I know that it can be hard to prioritize vacation. It’s an extra, an indulgence. But I really value being able to get away with my family, enjoying a break from real life,” said Rumaan. “We live in New York City, so for my family, there’s nothing more special than a holiday in a place with some green, some quiet, some fresh air. It’s a change of pace, and in my own personal experience, a little getaway gave me the big idea for my book. You can’t always go looking for inspiration, but you might be surprised where you find it.”

Whether an artist, fellow author in need of creative energy, or someone who’s just looking for a change of scenery, below are 10 remote stays from around the world that are sure to spark your imagination as Rumaan’s original stay did for him. Running the gamut from rustic to luxurious, these isolated but comfortable stays offer unique opportunities to unplug from the “real world.”
