Airbnb Experiences Celebrating Black History and Culture

Airbnb Experiences provide the opportunity to experience local neighborhoods, history and culture in a unique and immersive way. Through Experiences, travelers can sample different foods, visit historical sites that celebrate diverse communities and connect with people from all over the world.

This Black History Month, Airbnb is proud to celebrate the Black community through its inaugural “Airbnb Black Travel List”,honoring 18 Black travel leaders who are breaking barriers and inspiring people to explore the world.

Hair We Go: A Black Hair Tour in Harlem (New York City)

The expression of culture through hairstyles has been a long-standing signature of Black communities. From afros to braids, explore the many ways hair stands as a personal expression of who you are and what you stand for. On this tour, you will be ​exposed to both hair stores and hair stories, and will learn more about its specific significance to Black culture.

Walk Through African American History (Lithonia, GA)

The Flat Rock Archives specializes in preserving African American rural history in the South. Your guide, Johnny, takes you on a tour to help gain understanding of what it was like for families to live on small Southern farms before the Civil War. This is a Social Impact Experience where 100 percent of what you pay goes towards Flat Rock Archives. Social Impact Experiences allow for hosts to partner with nonprofits to create transformational interactions for local and global causes.

Tour of African American Culture (Nashville, TN)

Explore African-American culture with a passionate, energetic guide on an unconventional outdoor walking tour through one of Nashville’s most popular downtown neighborhoods. Hear the missing chapters in the story of Nashville that include juicy untold stories about music and culture.

Go Crabbing with a Charleston Native (Charleston, SC)

This is an authentic Charleston Experience with a true Charleston native. You’ll learn how to crab, throw a cast net, set bait and fish. You can expect to catch crabs, shrimp, and a variety of fish and take home whatever is of legal size.

Make a Floral Headdress: Design with Wine (Oakland, CA)

Judi is the owner of Mannequin Madness, the only mannequin recycling company in the Bay Area. In less than two hours, you will make a floral headdress that is great to wear for weddings, music festivals and celebrations. If you have a sense of fun, flair for fashion and love beautiful (faux) flowers, you will love this workshop.

Feast Upon Charleston (Charleston, SC)

On this Experience, you will enjoy an evening of exquisite southern cuisine, music and specially prepared beverages. Through this four-course dinner, you will learn about some of Charleston’s best kept secrets when it comes to cooking and cuisine — and after dessert, spontaneous dancing may occur.

Harlem History with a Community Leader (Harlem, NY)

Your host, Savona, is a Harlem community organizer, art curator, and founder and executive director of the West Harlem Art Fund, which organizes high-profile public arts exhibits throughout New York City. This Experience is a journey from the 1500s to present day and on this walk you’ll learn about Harlem’s vast history.
